Making her return to the glamour of a Royal Film Performance for the first time in four years, the Princess of Wales shone in a carefully considered outfit that quietly spoke volumes.
In a week in which the lines between royal and non-royal engagements were blurred, and claims and counterclaims flew around the controversial publication of Earl Spencer's memoir about the mother-in-law she tragically never met, Kate rose above the fray as a classy reminder that the show must, and will, go on.
She and the Prince of Wales were the guests of honour at the London premiere of Tom Cruise’s new movie, Digger, and were greeted outside by the Hollywood star and the film’s director, Alejandro González Iñárritu.

Kate looked sensational in a flowing gown by Jenny Packham, in regal purple. But her choice of jewellery was also telling. A dazzling, heart-shaped amethyst sautoir necklace once owned by Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and the famous Collingwood pearl earrings that belonged to Diana, Princess of Wales, honoured the memory of two remarkable women who represented the royal family before her. It also served as a reminder of the continuity of the monarchy that will one day be headed by William, with Kate at his side.
"She knows how to dress to impress, but she also knows how to send a message through her clothing," says Robert Jobson, the author of Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
In a week in which Diana continued to make global headlines, "There she was, bedecked in Diana's jewels, looking a million dollars, queen of the red carpet, and not since Diana have you really seen anyone quite so high profile in the royal family.
"She looked like a future queen."
William and Kate’s appearance was a welcome boost for the royal family after days of headlines dominated by stories dating back almost three decades. Chief among them, the unpleasant war of words between Earl Spencer and the King, who cast doubt on his former brother-in-law’s recollection of a conversation they had in the days that followed Diana’s death.

"What Catherine brings is steadiness," says the royal author Ingrid Seward. "She will be the lynchpin that keeps the royal family together going forward. She keeps William together.
"Her cancer absolutely rocked him and the thought of losing her was just unbearable. I think that has really cemented their togetherness."
"Her star has only risen since that moment. People appreciate her more than they've ever done before. I think she's probably more popular than ever, really," Robert adds.
© Getty ImagesHours before their joint outing, William had ignored a question from the media about the fallout from his uncle's book, Swan Song, with its various barbs about the King, as he arrived at the ActOne cinema in west London to meet young filmmakers. He looked decidedly more comfortable that evening with his wife at his side and the pair looked incredibly happy to be out together.
Inside the cinema, they were reunited with Sir David Beckham and his sons Romeo and Cruz, proving their enduring appeal to A-listers.
"William definitely visibly relaxes when Catherine is near, he is very happy for her to take the spotlight in a way that, back in the day, Charles wasn't with Diana, of course, but he is now with Camilla," says the royal author Simon Vigar. "They are clearly a double act. It's very hard to do that job on your own, and I think we'll see an even stronger double act when the time comes, when William becomes king.
"Catherine is obviously very, very important to him, personally and publicly."
"She is able to keep his feet on the ground in a way that no other person could, a bit like the Queen Mother did with King George VI,” Robert adds. “He's more confident, content and happy when he's with her. There's no doubt about that."

William and Kate’s starry outing was significant, coming a day after the Duke of Sussex made his annual appearance at the WellChild Awards, one of a series of public events he has taken part in since his return to the UK in August.
His outings, which follow the same format they did during his time as a senior working royal, will perhaps inevitably now compete for attention with those being carried out by his estranged brother and sister-in-law, despite his departure from royal life.
Whatever their feelings behind the scenes, William and Kate have kept their focus firmly on the job in hand and their family's future.
"Whatever's going on around them, they just get on with it. They don't get dragged in," Robert says. "I think Catherine just wants stability for her husband and for her children."

Kate’s star power and ever-ready smile will have helped to steady the ship in a difficult week. But while she brought megawatt glamour to proceedings, she was every bit as focused on lower key engagements, including one decidedly less glitzy outing two days later.
In the hours leading up to the film premiere, Catherine showed her easy connection with others at a special tea party she hosted for fellow Three Peaks Challenge participants at Windsor Castle. Guests included 11-year-old Ted Haslam, who completed the feat in his wheelchair with support from his father Pete and family members and friends.
At Garon Park in Southend-on-Sea later that week, she met people being supported by the Forward Trust, a charity of which she has been patron since 2021, having been patron of Action on Addiction, which merged with the Forward Trust, since 2012, at the start of her public life.
Declining a pair of gardening gloves, she got her hands dirty as she helped to pot seedlings alongside recovering drug and alcohol addicts during a session designed to harness the power of nature in their rehabilitation.
"William and Catherine always made it clear that they weren’t going to just cut ribbons and unveil plaques on royal engagements," says Ingrid, the author of Catherine & Diana. "They were going to go out there and do stuff and really engage with people and get their feet dirty and then gradually find things that they really could concentrate on and help with.
"It says a lot that this week was the first film premiere that Catherine had been to for a long, long time. There has been less of that and more of the other [longer-term projects], but they have to do the glamorous things as well because it's kind of yin and yang. It works together."
Robert agrees. "The glamour is all part of being a princess and her presence in helping to steer the royal family through a challenging time is essential. She really is the jewel in the crown and I think she's embracing it all rather than just doing it because she has to.
"She’ll want to protect William but also the birthright of her son. She and William are the conduit figures of making sure that the modern monarchy is really something that's relevant going forward. She really will play a crucial role."
