Health fears for Princess Alexandra, 89, after surprise absence – report

Princess Alexandra has sparked health fears following her surprise absence from a poignant event over the weekend. 

The 89-year-old royal, who is the late Queen Elizabeth II's last surviving bridesmaid, had been expected to attend a concert celebrating the legacy of the late Duchess of Kent, her sister-in-law, at Sinfonia Smith Square in Westminster on Sunday evening. 

A listing in the Court Circular, which details the royal family's official engagements, read: "Princess Alexandra this afternoon attended a performance by students and alumni of Future Talent celebrating the legacy of the Charity’s Co-Founder, the late Duchess of Kent, at Sinfonia Smith Square, London SW1."

However, the Princess reportedly did not end up attending the concert, with a source telling the Daily Mail's Richard Eden that she "unfortunately had to pull out at the last moment".

Princess Alexandra's last public engagement was nearly six months ago, when she joined senior working members of the royal family at a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the late Queen's centenary in April. 

However, she was absent for Trooping the Colour, which celebrates King Charles's official birthday, in June. Later this year, she will celebrate her 90th birthday on Christmas Day.  

Who is Princess Alexandra?

Princess Alexandra is a first cousin of the late Queen, the only daughter of Prince George of Kent and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. 

Alexandra, the Honourable Lady Ogilvy, is the sister of Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, 90, and Prince Michael of Kent, 84.

She was one of the bridesmaids at Queen Elizabeth's wedding to Prince Philip in November 1947, and the cousins were known to be close.

On 24 April 1963, Alexandra married The Hon. Angus James Ogilvy at Westminster Abbey and the couple went on to have two children – James and Marina Ogilvy.

Alexandra still resides at Thatched House Lodge in Richmond, London – a Crown property purchased on a 150-year lease from the Crown Estate Commissioners by Angus Ogilvy after their wedding in 1963 – and the home she shared with her husband, who sadly died in 2004.

In recent years, Alexandra and her siblings have scaled back their duties, though they remain working members of the royal family.

As well as attending the Queen's centenary in April, she is usually among the guests to attend the monarch's Christmas lunch each year for extended family at Buckingham Palace.

An event to celebrate the Duchess of Kent

It has been a difficult period for the Duke of Kent, who lost his wife, the Duchess of Kent, in September 2025 at the age of 92.

On Sunday, the Duke of Kent and Prince Michael attended a concert organised by the late royal's charity, Future Talent.

Also present were the Duke and Duchess's three children, Lady Helen Taylor, the Earl of St Andrews, and Lord Nicholas Windsor. 

They were also joined by their grandchildren, Lady Marina Windsor and Lady Amelia Windsor, while Prince and Princess Michael of Kent's son, Lord Frederick Windsor, was joined by his wife, Peep Show actress Sophie Winkleman.
