From the 'sandwich' technique for layering your skin care, to the Japanese double moisturising hack, is taking centre stage in the latest viral beauty trends. The goal is always the same: a healthy, that serves as the perfect canvas for any look.

In keeping with the quiet luxury aesthetic that has taken the beauty world by storm, 'cloud skin' has entered the chat. As professional make-up artist Cristina G Nuevo, succinctly puts it, this season we all want " without the heavy make-up."

What is 'cloud skin'? An expert explains the make-up trend taking over TikTok and red carpets

While skin care trends on social media range from the practical to the ridiculous, there's one that's really one to get on board with, especially if you're in midlife, is cloud skin.

"It isn't aiming for that ultra-dewy finish that's dominated social media and red carpets for so long, but it doesn't land in dry or flat matte territory either. It sits in a much more flattering middle ground," explains the make-up artist. "The skin looks smooth and balanced, with visibly blurred pores and a subtle glow that comes from thorough prep rather than a heavy-handed highlighter."

Why 'Cloud Skin' is uniquely flattering for women over 40

The best news for is that cloud skin doesn't accentuate fine lines, wrinkles or uneven textures, making it pretty much the perfect technique—although it really suits everyone.

"One of the best things about this trend is that it simply enhances your natural beauty. Your skin still looks like skin—just more even, rested, and radiant"

"The great advantage of this trend is that it softens features, doesn't emphasise texture too much and leaves a very flattering finish on all types of faces," notes Nuevo.

  • "If you're in your 20s, it looks fantastic because it keeps that fresh, weightless feel that's so sought-after at that age."
  • "In your 40s and 50s, it's just as flattering—it doesn't harden your features or leave skin looking parched, and it avoids the excess shine that can sometimes accentuate pores, fine lines, or uneven texture."

How to get the 'Cloud Skin' look: Step-by-step beauty routine

What makes cloud skin the go-to choice for summer is its embrace of cosmetic minimalism:  What’s more, the step-by-step guide to achieving it is foolproof, even for beginners, as the MUA explains:

  • Skin prep: "If your skin isn't well-prepped, you'll never get that clean, soft-focus finish that defines the look. Ideally, you want to use hydrating yet lightweight formulas that leave skin feeling comfortable and fresh, without overloading it. The aim isn't shiny skin, but balanced skin."
  • Foundation: When it comes to make-up, "rather than reaching for heavy or high-coverage foundations, opt for a fluid formula, a skin tint, or a lightweight foundation with a natural, semi-matte finish." The expert advises against blanket coverage, recommending instead that you "focus on evening out your skin tone while letting your natural complexion shine through."
  • Concealer: "Keep it strictly to targeted spots—like under the eyes, around the sides of the nose, or over any small patches of redness—rather than applied like a second foundation." .
  • Cheeks: "Cream or liquid textures work brilliantly. A seamless adds a flush of freshness without disrupting that soft-focus finish. The same goes for bronzer, which should be subtle with no harsh lines."
  • Setting powder: For the final step, "setting powder definitely has its place, but only where you actually need it. Dusting a little over the T-zone is ideal for knocking back shine and smoothing out texture without flattening the rest of your face. If you sweep it all over, though, you’ll lose that soft, flattering dimension."

It’s a universally flattering look where, thanks to liquid and cream formulas, every product melts together for a seamless, completely natural result that subtly elevates your features. Weightless, understated, and velvety-soft, this clean make-up trend is set to be the most sought-after look of summer 2026, and it will carry right into autumn.
