Keith Urban appeared overcome with emotion as he performed a poignant song about losing a former love, amid reports that his ex-wife Nicole Kidman may have moved on with another man.

The 58-year-old country singer was performing at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on Friday night when he introduced We Go Back, a track from his latest album, Flow State.

Before launching into the song, Keith explained the bittersweet story behind it, telling the audience it was about childhood sweethearts whose relationship falls apart after the man makes a mistake.

"This song is about a guy and a girl growing up in a small town," he said. "They were the first of their friends to fall in love. They had a good thing going, until the guy screwed it up. I will do that."

The comments come just months after Keith and Nicole finalized their divorce following almost 20 years of marriage, and as the actress has recently been linked to private equity businessman Michael Reinstein.

Keith continued explaining the song's storyline, revealing that the former couple unexpectedly cross paths again many years later. "This guy can't believe it. He sees the girl, she looks exactly the same. They start talking, they are getting along great. She tells him she's got somebody else," he said.

He then launched into the emotional chorus, which centers on the man's regret over letting the woman go and discovering that it is now "too late" because she has found somebody new.

Footage from the evening showed Keith becoming visibly emotional on stage, at one point crouching down and wiping tears from his face while smiling at the crowd.

"This is why we keep coming back to Atlantic City," he told his cheering fans.

While the timing of the performance has inevitably raised eyebrows given Nicole's rumored new romance, Keith did not suggest that the song or his emotional reaction was about his former wife. We Go Back appears on his latest album, Flow State, which was released in June.

Nicole Kidman sparks new romance rumors

Nicole, 59, has recently found herself at the center of speculation over her relationship with businessman Michael Reinstein.

The Big Little Lies actress was linked to Michael last month after the pair were spotted enjoying Aperol Spritzes together in Portofino, Italy.

Neither Nicole nor Michael has publicly confirmed that they are in a relationship. The reports nevertheless come after Nicole spent the first months following her divorce embracing a new chapter in her life.

Keith, meanwhile, has also faced speculation about his romantic life since the couple separated. He has previously been linked in reports to singer Karley Scott Collins and musician Maggie Baugh, although both women denied the rumors.

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman's marriage

Keith and Nicole first met at the G'Day USA gala in Los Angeles in January 2005 and married in Sydney the following year.

Their marriage would go on to become one of Hollywood and country music's most enduring high-profile relationships, with the couple frequently speaking about their devotion to one another.

They welcomed daughter Sunday Rose in 2008, followed by Faith Margaret in 2010. Nicole is also mom to Bella and Connor, whom she adopted during her previous marriage to Tom Cruise. After 19 years together, news broke in September 2025 that Nicole and Keith had separated.

Nicole filed for divorce on September 30, citing irreconcilable differences, and the former couple finalized proceedings in January 2026. As part of their settlement, both agreed to waive rights to child and spousal support.

Keith Urban's life after divorce

Since the split, Keith has largely poured his energy into his music. His latest album arrived five months after his divorce from Nicole was finalized, marking the beginning of a markedly different period in his personal and professional life.

Nicole has similarly remained busy, balancing her acting career with life as a mother to their daughters. And although Keith's performance of We Go Back comes at a particularly poignant moment given the speculation surrounding his ex-wife's personal life, he has not publicly connected the track to their marriage.
