Debbie Gibson's message for her 56th birthday

Debbie shared a heartwarming picture of her younger self sporting a yellow ruffled dress, straw hat and a miniature guitar on her big day.

The entertainer got sentimental in her caption as she expressed: "I was thinking about what picture defines me and this one came to mind. I know many of you have seen it before. It's who I've always been and who I will always be. Marching to my own drum, a bit defiant… and my legs [as] starring characters in the show onstage and off. Even at two years old on the front steps in Merrick, Long Island!"

She continued: "Maybe it's the freedom I feel when I'm being 100 me. It's never about how I look… I don't always nail the aesthetics. It's about how the way I feel informs the way I move through life."

Debbie credited her parents for instilling a deep love for music from a young age, as she gushed: "TY Dad for instilling the joy of music into my piano fingers and voice and my late Mom who couldn't get over the Aussie love til the day she transcended."

Just ask Dolly!"
