Sam Champion shared an update on his health on October 1 and revealed he's overhauled his wellness routine and lost a significant amount of weight.
Taking to Instagram, Sam posted a photo of himself at the gym looking healthy and showing off a leaner physique.
In his message, he referenced the emergency he faced earlier this year and how it ultimately saved his life.
"We are at SIX months since I walked into the emergency room in Mount Sinai and walked out with two stents in the arteries leading to my heart! ( they were 80% blocked)," he wrote. "Sometimes life refocuses you on a NEW CHAPTER! A SECOND CHANCE! A SECOND SEASON! i sure didn’t see it coming.. today I am 10 pounds lighter, eating better, my energy is back and I am in the gym… walking and swimming… with hopes of being healthier at 65 YEARS OLD. Do you remember when your life turned in a different direction?"
Fans quickly began commenting, calling him "an inspiration," and thanking him for opening up about his journey and raising awareness for heart health.
What happened to Sam?
In March 2026, Sam shared a photo of himself in hospital after undergoing a "nuclear stress test."
At the time, he said the medical team had "found some things," and that they needed to be taken care of.
"I went in to the cardiac catheterization laboratory….. and we took care of it," he said.
Despite admitting he was expected to make a full recovery, Sam later shared a lengthy video on social media from his home in which he confessed: "I have no doubt that the test that we did saved my life, which is not an easy thing to say."
He had two stents — tiny tubes inserted into narrowed or weakened veins or arteries to improve blood flow and reduce clogging — in arteries leading to his heart.
Sam was diagnosed with skin cancer twice
Sam has faced a series of challenging health concerns, and in October 2024 he stepped away from his role at GMA to treat basal cell carcinoma after noticing a spot under his left eye.
The meteorologist had surgery and documented his journey to raise awareness of skin cancer.
Sam previously dealt with the disease when he was diagnosed with skin cancer at the age of 26.
