Woody Allen objects to Mia Farrow being called as witness

Lawyers acting on behalf of Woody Allen have asked a court to prevent a clothing company from putting his former partner Mia Farrow and wife Soon-Yi on the stand as part of the firm's defence against claims it used the director's image in billboard campaigns without permission.

In court papers filed on Monday the 73-year-old Oscar-winner's lawyers said a possible witness list provided by American Apparel included both Mia and his current wife. This, says Woody's team, demonstrates "the unmistakable intent to transform this trial into a spectacle".

His legal representatives added that any attempts to put Rosemary's Baby actress Mia on the witness stand was "part of a brutish attempt to smear and intimidate Mr Allen".

The Annie Hall star sued American Apparel for $10 million more than a year ago. Jury selection for the trial is due to get underway on May 18
