Pope prays at sites holy to Jews, Christians and Muslims

Pope Benedict places a written prayer into a gap in the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, calling on the "God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob" to send "peace upon this Holy Land, upon the Middle East, upon the entire human family".

On his first visit to Israel the Roman Catholic leader also toured the Dome of the Rock, where Muslims believe the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven. He is the first pontiff to see the site.

He later crossed into the occupied West Bank where he was scheduled to deliver a homily during an outdoor service in Bethlehem.

On Monday Pope Benedict visited Yad Vashem, the memorial to the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust. There he called for their suffering never to be "denied, belittled or forgotten".
