Record industry body IFPI said its anti-piracy unit is working with Simon Cowell's record label to find out how an unreleased track by X Factor winner Leona Lewis was leaked on to the internet.
It is believed the song was lifted by computer hackers, who mounted a "sustained attack" on the Syco label's systems, rather than being passed on by people involved in the recording process.
The stolen track is a duet with SexyBack singer Justin Timberlake, and had been recorded for Leona's forthcoming November album.
The record was tipped to be one of this year's biggest selling UK albums, but, producers expect this leak to cost Leona, Simon and Syco Records, millions of pounds.
Simon Cowell contacted authorities after the misdemeanour was discovered and a police investigation is ongoing.
