Prince Edward sat at his wife's bedside as she regained consciousness after three hours of surgery to save her life

Surrounded by messages of love and concern from the royal family, the Countess of Wessex was preparing to leave hospital at the weekend after losing a much-wanted first baby.

After visiting his wife on Friday, the Earl of Wessex described the trauma of his wife losing a baby through an ectopic pregnancy as “about the most painful thing anyone can undergo”.

Speaking to reporters following a visit to his wife at the King Edward VII hospital in central London, he said: “It was a pretty traumatic experience. We are delighted that it has been sorted out but undoubtedly as the pain reduces so does the relief.”

The Countess of Wessex spoke of her sadness but remained optimistic they might still start a family. She also thanked members of the family and the media for their sympathy.

This sad setback comes after months of unrelenting criticism which have, according to Palace sources, left Sophie close to a break-down. At one point last spring the Countess confided to HELLO!: “Whatever I do, I just cant win.”
