Although the “main event” – the nuptials of Prince Frederik and Mary Donaldson - takes place Friday, the high-voltage glamour expected of the celebrations was already clearly in evidence at a pre-wedding gala performance the previous evening.
The bride-to-be, who had chosen a simple red silk gown to set off her jewels, was resplendent in a stunning ruby tiara, necklace and earrings from the collection of late Danish matriarch Queen Ingrid.
She and Frederik were joined at the event in Copenhagen’s Royal Theatre, by a host of young European royals, including the Count and Countess of Wessex, Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe and his bride-to-be Letizia, and Princess Caroline of Monaco.
Caroline made her own inimitable contribution the evening’s style factor with a dramatic gold-lamé halterneck with deep décolletage, while Letizia had opted for an off-the-shoulder evening jacket above a figure-hugging red gown. Also enjoying the evening were Norway’s Princess Martha Louise and her husband Ari Behn, the Duke of Luxembourg, and Frederik’s younger brother Prince Joachim, accompanied by his wife Princess Alexandra.
