Few things provoke as much subtle desperation as sleep. We all crave proper rest, but getting that in our overstimulated world can be very difficult – at least it is for me and the 48% of British adults who say poor sleep makes them feel more irritable, stressed and overwhelmed, according to research by Mental Health Foundation.
It’s probably why so many of us stockpile sleep aids, covering all bases from melatonin gummies and lavender sprays to white noise machines and blackout curtains.
Not Trinny Woodall, though, who seems to have cracked the code on getting a ‘phenomenal night’s sleep’. And she credits it to a single bedside staple: an oversized silk eye mask.
The beauty entrepreneur, 62, has a forever-fresh complexion that speaks for itself. She described wearing a silk eye mask overnight as the “perfect ingredient for a good night’s sleep”.
“I love it," Trinny shared in a video posted to her Instagram profile. "You just put it on and you have nowhere where you’re going to get marks around your face. I just have a phenomenal night’s sleep.”
Are oversized silk eye masks worth the £60+ price tag?
Look, I recognise that paying over £60 for an eye mask may seem steep to us normal folk, especially if you’ve used a standard cotton or synthetic sleep mask in the past and didn’t like it.
But genuine 100% silk is a completely different kettle of fish: it feels beautifully glossy on your face, preserves moisture and eliminates friction. In short: it has skincare benefits, as well as sleep ones.
In the interest of journalism, I decided to answer this question for myself, as someone with an infamously delicate relationship with sleep.
I opted for the Silk Sleep Mask by Kloris, an independent British beauty brand I already love the skincare products from, mainly because it has a wrap-around design with no pressure points, so I knew it would be comfy all night long.
My review of Kloris’ Silk Sleep Mask
Without sounding too boring, a single late evening or an unexpected rendezvous in my diary can unravel my sleep routine for days. As such, I wasn’t very convinced that a silk sleep mask would really do much.
I already own an eye mask, but I’m privy to ripping it off when I want to check my phone or when I get frustrated with not being able to doze off.
Kloris’ one is different: because of how glossy the silk is, I actually enjoyed wearing it. It's comfortability is actually how it has improved my sleep, because I don't want to take it off at night thanks to how plush the material feels against my face.
I also love how the hypoallergenic silk reduces skin friction and hair breakage. And despite its large size to block out 100% of light, it doesn’t feel suffocating.
Like Trinny, this is now my nighttime sleeping secret weapon, especially for days when it feels oh-so-easy to throw caution to the wind and have a pointlessly late night.
