Denmark's Prince Joachim has made his first solo public appearance since he and his wife announced they are splitting up. The 35-year-old found himself at the centre of a media scrum when he opened a nature project in southern Denmark on Tuesday.

With the strain of recent days showing on his face, the statuesque royal said he would immerse himself in work to help deal with the painful weeks ahead. "It is a very difficult period that my family and I are going through," he said. "It has a great significance for me that I can continue my official duties and tasks."

The people of Denmark were left stunned last week when it was revealed he and Princess Alexandra were to divorce. No specific reason has been given for the decision, though there have been widespread reports of tension between them.

Alexandra is expected to live in the couple's Copenhagen apartment, while her husband will reside at Schackenborg Castle, near the German border.

The pair first met in Hong Kong in 1994. They married in November the following year and went on to have two children, Prince Nikolai, five, and two-year-old Prince Felix. Their divorce will be the first in the Danish royal family since 1846.
