Britain's head of state, who has been widely applauded in recent days for her steadfastness in the face of tragedy, has been continuing her efforts to boost morale around the country. With a cheerful smile on her face, the Queen paid a visit to Winchester on Tuesday for the 250th anniversary of one of the UK's oldest Army regiments.

Her Majesty was greeted by soldiers past and present when she arrived at the Royal Green Jackets headquarters. Troopers dressed in uniforms spanning the celebrated regiment's entire history stood to attention when their Colonel-in-Chief turned out to join in the festivities.

The royal visitor, who just a few days ago led celebrations to mark the end of World War II, looked delighted when she was honoured with a salute from 200 veterans of the conflict. And the 79-year-old appeared to be in equally positive spirits later in the day when she and her husband met up with Tony Blair in London.

She and the Duke of Edinburgh were evidently determined to put the events of past days behind them and present an upbeat approach as they played host to the Prime Minister at Buckingham Palace. And the sovereign's efforts in the wake of last Thursday's bombings have not gone unnoticed across the pond: "Monarchs have little more than symbolic value these days, but sometimes they can symbolize the values and courage of a nation in a wonderful way," wrote one American newspaper. "Queen Elizabeth has done just that."
