Not often seen showing their affection for each other in public, Norway's Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit gave onlookers a touching demonstration of their continuing love at the weekend.

Attending the annual ski festival in Holmenkollen on the outskirts of Oslo, the couple were seen kissing and cuddling in the grandstand in front of thousands of spectators.

It's proof the pair, who initially faced public opposition to their union owing to Mette-Marit's turbulent past, remain as much in love as ever eight years after their wedding.

Above all, though, it was a family occasion for the royal couple, who were joined by their children, 13-year-old Marius, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, six, and Prince Sverre, four, as well as King Harald and Queen Sonia.

Protected from the biting cold in warm anoraks and woolly hats, the youngsters were enthralled by the competitions and musical performances at the newly refurbished sports venue, which is set to host the Nordic World Ski Championships next year.

And there was even greater delight for the royal party as they watched Norwegian jumpers secure five of the seven medals on offer at the event, even if it was Switzerland's Simon Ammann who took home the day's big prize.
