Supermodels have been fixtures of catwalk inspiration for models, artists and fashion fans for decades. They are our clearest glimpse into what each year deemed the pinnacle of beauty – and as you'll see, there's not just one 'kind' of beauty that these models fit to. From the dramatically contrasted features of Shalom Harlow to Kate Moss' girl-next-door good looks and Naomi Campbell's eternal glamour, trends might come and go but true beauty is timeless.
See which supermodel defined the year you were born and what made them shine even brighter that year.

1989 – Elle Macpherson
Elle Macpherson's enviably long and voluminous blonde tresses paired with a beaming smile gave the model a grounded charm, making her not just aspirational but likeable too.
A record-breaking run of appearances on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in the '80s had Time magazine coining her nickname 'The Body' at the end of the decade and Elle would eventually go on to hold the record with five covers in total.

1990 – Naomi Campbell
Naomi Campbell isn't just a '90s superstar, she's still an icon today. At just 18, Naomi was featured as the first Black woman on the cover of Vogue It's no wonder, then, that Interview singled her out of the Famous Five in 1990 as "the reigning megamodel of them all".
Six years later, she made history again as the first Black woman to open the Victoria's Secret Show. Need we say more? Now aged 56, Naomi has two children, a daughter born in May 2021 and a son born in June 2023. She has not publicly revealed their names or shown their faces and is reportedly raising her children as a single mother.

1991 – Linda Evangelista
Everything about Linda Evangelista screams glamour but she isn't afraid of hard work. Appearing on over 700 magazine covers, the model had a serious chop in 1988, her short hair-do quickly being dubbed 'The Linda'.
In 1990, she made even more of a splash when she quipped in a Vogue interview that she wouldn't get out of bed "for less than $10,000". The quote might have stuck, to the model's regret, but it's her fashion forward moments we love the best.

1992 – Cindy Crawford
Cindy Crawford was surely the blueprint for simple yet seductive dressing in 1992's Pepsi advert. It might sound strange, but this mainstream ad had the attention of millions and launched Cindy to new heights of stardom.
We're still longing for the perfect white tank top and cut off jeans for a staple of summer dressing. Even the model has playfully paid homage to the advert, recreating it for charity and while on a holiday retreat.

1993 – Christy Turlington
True A-list fame often brings an immortal (and unsettling) double in the form of a waxwork. But in Christy's case, the Metropolitan Museum of Art decided to base 120 mannequins on her visage in 1993.
She also found success as an actor and co-starred in the music video for George Michael's Freedom, proving her talents didn't just extend to the catwalk or even the museum.

1994 – Kate Moss
Kate Moss' star power was such that in 2013, she formed the basis of a rom-com sub-plot in About Time. As Rachel McAdams says, her magic comes from the "informality of her early shots", knowing "she's still just the same, cheeky normal girl".
It's this grounded charm that has likely had us still waiting for a glimpse of the fashion star at showbiz events. It seems she's passed down her catwalk talents and daughter Lila is just as keen to take to the runway.

1995 – Shalom Harlow
While some models break out of the mould due to a general consensus, sometimes there's an official announcement – as official as it gets – that there's one model to watch in particular.
In 1995, that model was Shalom Harlow. With her dark features and fair skin, the model brought high-contrast high fashion looks to the runway. Vogue and VH1 decided to solidify her fame, and make history, by naming her their first ever model of the year in 1995.

1996 – Claudia Schiffer
Nobody does blonde bombshell quite like Claudia Schiffer! Endless gold waves and eyes that always seem to look through the camera, Claudia is a masterclass in '90s modelling.
She's been a homeware businesswoman, fashion photography curator, mother to three and producer. We have just one question for you, Claudia: what can't you do?
