Gordon Ramsay currently holds 14 Michelin stars across his empire of restaurants, and the famous chef has just opened the newest addition to his Bread Street Kitchen chain in Dubai. The chef, who is as famous for his talent as his temperament in the kitchen, already has sites in London, Hong Kong and Singapore and has chosen the majestic five-star hotel Atlantis, The Palm, as the home of his new venture.
We talk to Gordon about why he chose the lavish Atlantis, found on Dubai's man-made, tree-shaped mega-island Palm Jumeirah – where Mark and Michelle Wright recently honeymooned and where Kim Kardashian stayed earlier this year – and why Dubai has captured his imagination.
Why Dubai for Bread Street Kitchen & Bar?
It's so exciting, Dubai is now on a par with some fantastic foodie destinations, New York, London and Paris! The footfall of customers is amazing and the cuisine exceptional. I couldn't think of a better partner than Atlantis, the place is fantastic. It has got something for everyone and the culinary scene is like a secret hotspot in the middle of the desert.
What can we expect from your new restaurant in Atlantis, The Palm?
The menu will draw on fantastic local produce, play on the spice elements, which I love, whilst delivering a wonderful slice of cool Britannia to Atlantis. It’s about the buzz, the atmosphere, the all-day excitement behind the menu, it has something for everyone, families will enjoy it, yet it’s also romantic, it's for quick dining or a leisurely evening with great cocktails and a kitchen that's on show.
You were one of the first international celebrity chefs to open a restaurant in Dubai. What do you love most about the city?
That was nearly 14 years ago! I've been here so many times since then, and always had a fantastic time, there is such a great mix of things to do for all the family. The water sports are incredible, trips out to the desert are a great experience, Tana and my daughters love the shopping. It's a cliché but there really is something for everyone.
If you could choose any city in the world, where would you open your next restaurant?
How often do you go to your restaurants and how closely involved in them are you?
I go into one of my restaurants, somewhere in the world, every day!
Tell us about your fitness regime at the moment, we hear you've just taken part in an Ironman?
It takes a lot of physical and mental preparation but it is something I enjoy with a passion.
You run a lot of marathons. What do you like about running them?
It gives you great time to think.
What's your favourite ingredient at the moment?
What's your favourite British dish?
A really great, fresh, crispy fish and chips.
And international dish?
Fragrant and flavoursome, juicy butter chicken.
