Claire and Hugh check out Gucci's hippy chic designs in Rome

Stardust actress Clare Danes often chooses Gucci creations to help her make an impression on the red carpet. So the blonde beauty - accompanied by her British actor boyfriend Hugh Dancy - was one of the guests of honour at the fashion house's special pre-season cruise collection presentation in Rome this week.

The pair who have been dating since the start of last year - took their seats in the front row at a 17th-century, hilltop villa as head womanswear designer at Gucci, Frida Giannini, unveiled a line dominated by billowy summer dresses. Usually presented in New York, this year's pre-spring runway show took place in the Italian capital to mark the 70th anniversary of the label's flagship store in the city.

Key words to encapsulate the designs, said Frida, were "colour, play, and hippy chic", while this season's hottest trend - flower motifs - was evident on a voluminous aquamarine blue maxi dress. Another standout piece, a long-sleeved autumn red gown, embellished with gold shells, gave a modern twist to the Seventies look.
