The sweet life took centre stage – literally – at Milan Fashion Week over the weekend as Dolce & Gabbana paid tribute to a classic Federico Fellini film.
La Dolce Vita was the inspiration for the Italian duo's menswear collection, which was shown off on a city-scene catwalk that featured a reproduction of a piazza and the famed Fontana di Trevi.
The runway show – which also saw an Anita Ekberg lookalike kicking her shoes off in homage to the film's famous fountain scene – included a number of classic silhouettes reminiscent of the 1960 film and its star, Marcello Mastroianni. Among the nods to the actor was a T-shirt which read, "Marcello, Come Here".
"(The collection) represents a return to elegance in a simple way – not brazen," explained one-half of the creative pair, Domenico Dolce.
Fellow Italian fashionista Donatella Versace, who also included a number of female models in her presentation, and edgy Brit style queen Vivienne Westwood were among the designers showing off their autumn-winter 2004-2005 menswear collections.
