It was only 2015 when Cannes Film Festival caused a controversy by allegedly banning all flat shoes from their red carpet events – but Marion Cotillard clearly pays no mind to that stipulation, true or not, since she turned up to a press photocall in a very surprising pair of shoes on Thursday. The actress made quite the statement by accessorising her strapless metallic midi dress with a pair of thigh-high lace-up flat boots – in contrast to her 355 co-stars Fan Bingbing, Lupita Nyong'o, Jessica Chastain and Penelope Cruz, who all opted for heels.

The actress is known for her ground-breaking style, thanks in part to stylist Eliott Bliss, who came up with this look for Marion. The ground-breaking boots in question look to be Nicholas Kirkwood's Casati satin over-the-knee-boots, which feature silver faux-pearl heel details.

Not to be outdone, Marion's fellow cast mates made quite the line-up as they promoted their new spy thriller – with Lupita wowing in head-to-toe black, Penelope choosing a floor-length white and blue gown and Jessica going for a colour-blocked midi dress. Cannes favourite Fan wore a white feathered skirt teamed with gold strappy heels.

Elsewhere at the film festival, there have been plenty of attention-grabbing looks on the iconic red carpet. Case in point: Julianne Moore, who looked stunning in a red Givenchy gown, while supermodels Leomie Anderson and Romee Strijd topped our best-dressed lists in Twinset and Alberta Ferreti respectively.

And while the no-heels rule is clearly a myth, Cannes did make the headlines this year for another reason - by outlawing selfies! Denying entrance to the screenings to anyone who goes against the rule, there were reportedly signs throughout the festival which read: "No selfies and pictures on the red carpet, thank you! Offenders will be denied entrance to the screening." Clearly Lupita thought she'd bend the rule though, since she took a quick snap with her fellow actresses on the way to the event – though perhaps yacht selfies don't count. Sigh…
