It's set to be the hottest UK summer on record, according to the Met Office, with the UK entering its fifth heatwave.
When it comes to looking cool when you're feeling anything but, there are a few style basics one can always turn to, and that's a humble pair of shorts. Shorts are ideal attire for the heatwave, as they provide great airflow for the legs, and they are easy to fold away and pop in your suitcase.
Some people, however, aren't fans of this timeless separate, perhaps due to the casual vibe it conveys.
Carole Middleton seems to share this sentiment. The mother of the Princess of Wales is known for her formal, timeless style and has only been pictured wearing shorts a couple of times, including in 2018 when on holiday.
In pictures that were published by the MailOnline, Carole joined her son James and youngest daughter Pippa on St. Barts' idyllic Colombier beach and donned a pair of relaxed, cut-off denim shorts.
The Princess of Wales wearing shorts
Princess Kate, however, enjoys wearing shorts from time to time, and her most recognisable pair were from 2022.
The royal headed to Plymouth with the 1851 Trust, where she joined Sir Ben Ainslie and the British crew at a SailGP event. Nailing nautical chic with quiet sophistication, the wife of Prince William sported a pair of 'Oyster' shorts with gold buttons, made from linen, from royally-loved brand Holland Cooper.
Kate's elegant, tailored shorts were the classy take on baring one's legs. Many would categorise these shorts as 'Bermuda', but they are slightly shorter, yet still respectable. Shorts like these give the leg great coverage and, due to the linen material, are designed to keep the body cool during noticeable heat.
Styling to perfection, Kate expertly teamed her shorts with a blue and white Breton striped jumper and her trusty Superga trainers, a favourite of hers for sporting events.
Carole's heatwave alternatives
Carole prefers to wear tailored linen trousers, sleek shirts, and resplendent mini dresses when the weather gets warmer.
A great example of this is the look she donned last month at Wimbledon.
Carole joined Pippa at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. The sun may have been blistering that day, but the 71-year-old donned a classic white dress from ME+EM, which she layered with a blue linen blazer. She carried the Longchamp 'Le Roseau S' bag and topped her look with Longchamp sunglasses.
