The Prince of Wales is a huge football fan, and is regularly seen losing control of his emotions when Aston Villa play, so it was surprising that he didn't cross the pond to cheer on the Three Lions during their recent run.
The hopes of the nation were crushed on Wednesday evening when Argentina beat the team 2-1. William was quick to share his support for the team in the aftermath, despite not flying out.
In his Eden Confidential column, the Daily Mail's Richard Eden has now revealed why William didn't cheer on the team in person, with it coming down to his children.
A friend of the family is reported to have told the journalist: "It's been an important time for the family, as George has finished at Lambrook."
George, 12, will be preparing for a major change in his life when he returns to education, as he will now be boarding at Eton College, just as his father did during his youth. The move was confirmed in a statement, which read: "Kensington Palace can confirm that Prince George will attend Eton College from this September."
It's not just George that William will be spending time with, as Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will also be finishing their terms as well, allowing the Wales family to enjoy their final summer together before George starts boarding.
Prince William's messages of support
Although the royal didn't attend the matches, he did tell Travis Kelce on his New Heights podcast that he would have flown out had England reached the final. "Definitely, if we're in the finals," he said when asked about his attendance.
Although other royals, like Crown Prince Haakon and Prince Sverre, have been seen in the United States, Canada and Mexico, William has still been showing his support, sharing messages after England's matches.
Following their elimination, the heir to the throne wrote: "Gutted. England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you. Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high."
England still has one more chance of glory, as they will take on France for third place on Saturday.
