Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank looked to people they "love and admire, past and present" when it came to naming their daughter. Following her birth, it was understood that the royal and her husband were taking time to decide on a name for their newborn daughter. Her name was finally revealed 14 days after she was born in Portugal.
Ultimately, the couple chose the name Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. Eugenie explained in an Instagram post that her baby girl was "named after three people we love and admire past and present, including her Great-Grandmother who we hold close in our hearts."
The Princess, who splits her time between the UK and Portugal because of her husband's work, noted that her daughter's name is "part of English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home."
Individuals behind the name
The baby's first name "Adelaide" was partly inspired by Maria Adelaide of Portugal and William IV's wife Queen Adelaide, whose brooches Eugenie wore as hair slides to her evening wedding reception in 2018. The baby's middle name "Elizabeth" is notably a tribute to Eugenie's late paternal grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, while "Annina" was inspired by a personal connection that has not been revealed.
So, just who is Annina?
It's known that Eugenie has a friend named Annina, Annina Pfuel that is. The Bavarian-born designer is the daughter of Count Christian Bruges-von Pfuel. She works as a creative director, costume designer and set designer for productions in opera, music videos, film and fashion.
Back in 2024, Eugenie attended Annina's wedding to Caspar von Veltheim in Bavaria, where she was pictured wearing a traditional dirndl dress. Annina is also among Princess Eugenie's Instagram followers.
While the personal connection behind Adelaide's middle name remains unknown, Sophie Kihm, baby name expert and editor-in-chief at Nameberry, told HELLO!: "Annina is a rare Italian nickname derived from Anne or Anna."
"You could interpret it to mean "little Anne" or "grace," the meaning of Anne/Anna," Sophie continued. "Anne is a frequent player in the British Royals family tree. Eugenie has an aunt Anne, and it is the name of six queens of England."
Baby Adelaide
Eugenie and Jack welcomed their third child, Adelaide, on August 3 at a hospital in Lisbon, Portugal. The baby is currently 15th in line to the throne. Buckingham Palace released a statement announcing her birth, which read in part: "Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of The Royal Family were delighted to be informed of the news."
Eugenie also shared the news on her Instagram with a tender snapshot of her newborn daughter, writing: "Jack and I are so excited to announce Baby Girl Brooksbank!! We are beyond in love with our girlie."
