Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are set to return to the UK by the end of the month, after stepping back as working royals in 2020 and moving to the US, where they built a home base in Montecito, California.
HELLO! can confirm King Charles was first made aware of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's plans on Sunday, and the monarch welcomes the opportunity to see more of Harry and his family in a private and personal capacity.
Harry and Meghan will remain as private individuals and non-working royals, in keeping with the agreement made in 2020, and the couple have not been offered a "half-in, half-out" option in their roles.
Prince William and Princess Kate were also made aware of Harry and Meghan's decision. The Sussexes have already enrolled their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in British schools, with the term commencing in September.
While it is unknown where the duo will reside, it is understood that they will live outside of London in a non-royal residence. They will maintain their home in Montecito, and Meghan will continue to run her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from the UK.
They previously lived at Frogmore Cottage, which Queen Elizabeth II gifted them for their wedding. After the release of Harry's controversial 2023 memoir, Spare, the Sussexes were asked to hand back the keys.

The unexpected move comes just over a month after Harry visited Charles at Highgrove House for a private lunch.
Harry and Meghan's last visit to the UK came in 2022 when they attended Queen Elizabeth's funeral, two years after they announced their decision to move to the US and step back as working royals.
The prince previously spoke with the BBC about his intention to reunite with his family after the fallout of 2020, with the 41-year-old sharing that he "would love a reconciliation". He added that he did not want to fight with his father, as he did "not know how much longer my father has".
"There's no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious," he added.
Harry also showed interest in moving back to his homeland during a conversation at the WellChild Awards in 2025 with British singer Joss Stone, who moved back to the UK after living in Nashville.
"He asked about how we were settling back in and was genuinely interested in our move home. He's just very warm and down-to-earth, as always. Maybe Harry will move back too. That would be nice," she told HELLO!
"He was saying how wonderful the schools are here and how important community is for children," she continued.
"It was nice to share that with him because it's exactly why we felt drawn to come back – for the kids to grow up surrounded by family, friends and a strong sense of belonging and, most importantly, in a safe environment."
