Let’s face it: getting the perfect blonde hair is a lifelong pursuit. But as we navigate our fifties, sixties, and beyond, the beauty goalposts begin to shift.

The icy, high-maintenance platinum of our youth might suddenly feel a little harsh against our complexions, and our hair texture simply doesn't play ball the way it used to. If you’ve been looking in the mirror and wondering if it’s time to rethink your signature shade, you could be ready for a small change.

To help us decode the glorious, if sometimes tricky, world of mature blonde hair, we need an expert. Enter Neil Moodie, top editorial stylist, founder of the Neil Moodie Studio, and the man trusted with some of the most famous heads of hair in the world.

Whether he is styling Jerry Hall (who delivered a stellar masterclass in glamour on Celebrity Traitors), the impeccably chic Dame Kristin Scott Thomas (who stole every single scene in Slow Horses), or the ultimate blonde icon herself, Pamela Anderson, Neil Moodie understands exactly what it takes to make mature hair look expensive, radiant, and modern.

The biggest mistake we make as we get older? Sticking stubbornly to a one-dimensional colour. "The most flattering blondes tend to be softer and more multi-dimensional rather than one flat hair colour," Neil explains.

It is time to step away from the stark bleach and instead think about luxury in your colour palette. "Think champagne, soft beige, golden honey, or buttery tones. Very icy or platinum shades can drain the skin as pigmentation changes, though they can work beautifully on some people."

The golden rule for finding your ultimate shade is to look closely at your skin. Neil advises matching the undertone of your hair to your complexion: cooler tones work wonders for pink or rosy complexions, while warmer golds are beautifully suited to olive or sallow skin.

Of course, achieving the perfect shade is only half the battle; maintaining it requires a dedicated strategy.

"Blonde needs more love as we age, because hair becomes drier and more fragile with time, and lightening adds to that," says Neil.

He recommends a purple or blue-violet shampoo once a week to keep brassiness at bay, but comes with a strict warning against heavy-handedness.

"Don’t overuse it. This can leave silver-blonde looking dull or lilac." To keep the hair shaft strong and reflective, you need to replenish lost moisture. Moodie suggests adding a weekly bond-repair or deep conditioning treatment to your routine, always using a heat protectant before styling, and booking in for a professional gloss or toner every six to eight weeks to keep the tone looking fresh and expensive.

Then comes the inevitable question of silver strands. Rather than viewing grey hair as the enemy in a constant, exhausting battle of root touch-ups, Neil champions the 'Grey Blend'. "You don’t have to fight grey," he insists. "Lowlights and soft baby lights blend in silver as it comes through, so regrowth is far less obvious for many women. This is the secret to blonde hair that looks natural and modern rather than harsh."

This modern approach extends to the cut, too. We have long abandoned the outdated notion that women of a certain age must chop off their lengths, but practicality does play a role in looking polished.

"There’s no age at which long hair is banned, but hair does thin and lose density, so healthy ends matter more than length," Neil notes. If your long hair is starting to look a little stringy, a strategic chop can work wonders.

"Many women find a cut around the collarbone or shorter looks fuller and glossier. Soft layers, a bob, or a textured crop add movement and body, and a good cut will always help to make colour look refreshed."

The blonde hair journey

Because our hair changes so dramatically through the decades, Neil breaks down exactly what our blonde needs as we progress through life:

In your 50s

Hormonal changes, particularly around menopause, can drastically affect your hair's texture and thickness, and this is the decade where grey often becomes much more prominent. Neil notes that this is the perfect time to introduce lowlights and transition into a softer, more blended blonde that forgives regrowth and adds visual depth to thinning hair.

In your 60s

As we enter our sixties, our skin tone tends to soften and lose some of its natural warmth. To counteract this, warmer or creamier blondes often flatter much more than stark, ashy ones. Because the scalp produces fewer natural oils, intense moisture and dedicated scalp care become absolutely essential to keep your blonde looking luminous.

In your 70s and 80s

Hair is often finer and far more delicate in these decades. "Gentler lightening, glosses, and low-maintenance, blended colour are kinder," says Neil. "Soft, silvery, or pearly blondes look beautiful and are beautifully easy to maintain."

Ultimately, the secret to fantastic hair at any age comes down to professional guidance and a healthy dose of realism. "Always see a colourist who is experienced in working with mature hair, and be honest about your lifestyle and how much upkeep you want," Neil concludes. "The best blonde is the one that suits your skin, your hair’s condition, and your routine."

The Gentle Anti-Brass Wash: Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet Shampoo

The Gentle Anti-Brass Wash: Kérastase Blond Absolu Bain Ultra-Violet Shampoo

How to use

Use strictly once a week as Neil advises; massage in and rinse after two minutes.

Many purple shampoos strip moisture from ageing cuticles, leaving grey-blondes dull or lavender. This formula blends concentrated violet pigments with hyaluronic acid and edelweiss flower, neutralising unwanted yellow undertones while plumping up parched, fragile hair shafts.

The Weightless Strength Builder: Living Proof Triple Bond Complex

The Weightless Strength Builder: Living Proof Triple Bond Complex

How to use

Apply two pumps to clean, damp hair weekly; wait 10 minutes before applying heat to activate the bond-building polymers.

Mature hair often can’t tolerate heavy, buttery masks that collapse fine volume. This weekly leave-in treatment rebuilds all three types of hair bonds (hydrogen, ionic, and covalent) without weighing down thinning crowns, leaving ends visibly thicker and noticeably softer.

The Shine Restorer: 98 Beauty The Gloss Miracle Oil

The Shine Restorer: 98 Beauty The Gloss Miracle Oil

How to use

Warm a few drops of the oil between your hands and smooth through mid-lengths to ends on damp or dry hair and layer as needed.

This conditioning Miracle Oil acts like an at-home cellophane treatment without being heavy on mature hair. Packed with the brand’s signature No.98 fragrance, The Gloss doubles as a fabulous hair perfume. Read more about one writer's love of 98 Beauty haircare.

The High-Slip Shield: GHD Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray

The High-Slip Shield: GHD Bodyguard Heat Protect Spray

How to use

Mist liberally through damp mid-lengths and ends before rough drying or using hot tools.

As hair loses its natural lipid barrier with age, heat styling can scorch fragile blondes fast. Infused with protecting polymers and conditioning agents, this mist prevents cuticles lifting for sleek, smooth hair.

The Texture & Frizz Perfector: Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler Cream

The Texture & Frizz Perfector: Philip Kingsley Elasti-Styler Cream

How to use

Smooth a 10p-sized amount through damp mid-lengths and ends before air-drying or diffusing to coax out soft, frizz-free definition and restore bounce to parched lengths.

As hair loses pigmentation and goes through hormonal shifts, its texture often changes dramatically - erratic kinks appear, curls lose their shape, and silver strands can turn wiry and rebellious. Formulated by the British trichological authority, this targeted styling cream delivers definition, and frizz protection. Backed by user trials where 82% agreed hair looked and felt noticeably less frizzy, it relies on a nourishing oil and butter nutri-elixir (a rich blend of avocado, olive, mango butter, and cotton seed oils). It shields keratin, detangles fragile strands, and restores natural spring and softness without crunch. As brand president Anabel Kingsley explains: "Our goal was to create a daily-use curl cream that showcased every kind of curl, yet left strands feeling soft and frizz free."

The Scalp Vitaliser: K18 Biomimetic Hairscience FutureIQ™ Biomimetic Hair Longevity Serum

The Scalp Vitaliser: K18 Biomimetic Hairscience FutureIQ™ Biomimetic Hair Longevity Serum

How to use

Use once nightly on a clean, dry or damp scalp. Distribute four measured droppers along your middle parting, side partings, and front hairline, massaging gently from the hairline back toward the crown. Leave in overnight—no rinsing required.

If you want to address ageing hair right at the root rather than just camouflaging the symptoms, this cutting-edge biotech serum treats scalp longevity like high-performance skincare. Formulated with patent-pending MultiVital™ technology, it targets premature follicle ageing, excessive shedding, and loss of density. In 12-week clinical trials, it delivered up to 19,000 more hairs in volume, reduced hair fall, and helped delay and reduce visible greying (with 70% of testers seeing fewer greys) while strengthening the delicate scalp barrier. For mature blondes whose strands feel progressively finer or sparser along the parting, it offers serious cellular-level reinforcement.

The Gentle Volume & Root-Lifting Tool: Dyson Airsmooth™ Styling Brush

The Gentle Volume & Root-Lifting Tool: Dyson Airsmooth™ Styling Brush

How to use

After prepping with heat protectant, guide the brush through damp sections from root to tip. Use the flat edge to stretch and smooth frizzy mid-lengths, and roll the curved teardrop edge under at the ends and over at the crown to lock in airy, salon-worthy bounce.

Traditional round-brush blowouts and scorching styling irons are often too punishing for mature, lightened blondes. Dyson’s wet-to-dry hot air brush takes the mechanical trauma out of styling. Powered by dual-bristle PivotFlex™ and anti-snag technology, it creates smooth tension without tugging delicate roots or scratching a sensitive scalp. Its clever teardrop-shaped barrel fits snugly against the crown to lift thinning roots and create instant, natural-looking body and movement. Crucially, Dyson’s intelligent heat control monitors airflow temperature over 20 times per second to prevent extreme heat damage, leaving mature blonde tones glossy and soft rather than fried and lacklustre.

The Overnight Friction Shield: Drowsy Hyalo Silk Pillowcase

The Overnight Friction Shield: Drowsy Hyalo Silk Pillowcase

How to use

Simply slip over your standard pillow (it features a discreet hidden zip closure to stop it sliding off). It’s machine washable and laboratory-tested to retain its hyaluronic infusion even after 100 washes.

As Neil notes, mature lightened hair is naturally more fragile and prone to dryness. Traditional cotton pillowcases act like giant sponges, sapping essential moisture from parched hair cuticles and causing abrasive friction that snaps delicate ends while you toss and turn. Crafted from high-density 22 momme pure mulberry silk, this pillowcase takes overnight hair care a step further: it is triple-infused with hyaluronic acid to deliver continuous overnight hydration while maintaining a frictionless glide. The result? Far fewer morning snarls, zero sleep-crease frizz, and preserved fragile ends that help your cut retain its shape.
