Michelle Monaghan is the funny woman in her newest film, Little Brother, but off screen, her family life is more peaceful.
The 50-year-old actress stars in the latest Netflix film alongside Eric André, John Cena, and Christopher Meloni, which premiered on Friday, June 26. The raunchy comedy is a new genre for Michelle, who most recently appeared in season three of The White Lotus.
But, no matter what genre she tackles, her husband Peter White has been by her side. The longtime couple are parents to two children, Willow, 16, and Tommy, 10. So, before you catch the actress's latest film, keep reading to learn more about Michelle's husband and kids.
Peter grew up in Australia. In 1994, he graduated from the University of Melbourne with a degree in criminology and politics. Two years later, he earned a certificate of graphic design from Victoria University.
While the graphic designer is from down under, he met his future wife in New York City. The two met while having drinks with friends at a bar, and Michelle was immediately hooked.
"He had blue eyes and a Mohawk," the True Detective actress told Women's Health in 2010, sharing that after saying she asked Peter out the day after they met. "It did something for me."
A few years after they first met, Peter proposed to Michelle after they were cleaning out the drawers of a vintage dresser they just bought.
"Every now and then we’ll be looking at old pictures, and I'll see the dresser in the background," she told NUVO in 2015. "I'm like, 'Oh, there's that dresser, that one dresser.'"
"I thought, well, gosh, I can totally identify with this," she told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2008. "He didn't try to break up our marriage at the 11th hour but I liked the idea that somebody was touching on it."
Three years after their wedding, the couple welcomed their first child, Willow Katherine, in 2008. In 2013, Michelle and Peter grew their family again when they welcomed their son Tommy Francis.
The family keeps their children out of the limelight. "You raise them because you want them to spread their wings, but then at the same time, not so far – you want to still remain connected," she told People in 2025.
She continued: "And so, I think I struggle with that a lot. You want them to hit all of these milestones and be independent, but at the same time, you still want to feel needed and you want them at home, of course."
While Michelle and Peter are fiercely protective of their children, the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang actress shares tidbits about her kids to social media. In April 2023, she posted to Instagram that her daughter Willow did her makeup.
The look was classically Michelle, rosy and natural. "My sweet, 14-yr old daughter, Willow, did my makeup tonight! My heart is so full! She is talented, has a lovely touch, but the real beauty was getting to sit so close to her!" the proud mom wrote. "Looking into her eyes and watching her work her magic well, was MAGIC! Thanks to the beautiful products by @charlottetilbury @rarebeauty @rmsbeauty for being the cherry on top to this very precious moment."
Aside from turning looks with natural makeup, Michelle and her husband are skin health advocates. In 2007, after Peter insisted she get a mole on her left calf checked out, Michelle tested positive for melanoma.
Afterwards, she became an advocate for sun safety and skin health. Her husband deals with skin issues too, living with chronic eczema for most of his life.
"About 20 years ago, one weary night, after living with chronic eczema, my husband @myherbitual said to me 'One day I wanna help anyone suffering in their own skin,'" Michelle wrote to Instagram in 2023 to celebrate Peter's birthday. "Cut to 20 years later, this very year, he made that 'notion' a reality - for himself and for everyone whose lives he'd hope to touch!"
