Kelly Ripa has opened up about a behind-the-scenes disagreement she had with the producers of Live! With Kelly & Mark. The "big fight" erupted over a subject the host flatly refused to address on air.
The producers suggested discussing Dictionary.com's word of the year during the show’s opening host chat. However, Kelly wasn't a fan of the suggestion. "Do you want to hear about the word of the year, everybody? We had a big fight backstage," she told the audience. "Oh, we had quite a fight."
The word in question was "maxxing". "I wouldn’t have picked this word," she said, before an audience member said, "What?"
"Correct, thank you," replied Kelly. The host went on to explain the term and how it is used, including the viral phrase "looksmaxing," which describes efforts to optimize your physical appearance.
Mark Consuelos then called the term "stupid" and said people "should probably do less of that". "Everybody-checked-outmaxxing," added Kelly, before she joked that she had watched "an entire audience of people go to sleepmaxxing."
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos' on-air debate
This wasn't the only dispute to occur on the ABC show this week. During the November 2 episode of Live!. The couple discussed running the 26.2-mile race together next year after watching this year's marathon. However, Mark wasn't too keen on the idea.
"It does make me want to run it," said Kelly. "People were suffering. It's a lot of suffering happening out there on social media. People are broadcasting the suffering. And I was like, maybe I don't want to run it."
The couple then opened up about a walk they took together following the marathon. "We went for a walk afterwards. Just a walk with the dogs. And Kelly said, 'We should run this together next year,'" shared Mark. "And I said, 'Together, you and who? You and the dogs?' And she said, 'No, you and me.' I'm like, 'No, I'm good.'"
However, Kelly was keen to persuade her husband about the idea. "I see people running it in, like, somebody dressed like a Twinkie running the marathon," she said. "And I go, 'This person ran a marathon in a Twinkie costume. Surely I could find a training partner and train for this thing.'"
"You could run it next year with a training partner. You could find one," Mark replied. "But you could be my training partner. We could do it together," said Kelly. "Nope," added Mark, before Kelly explained that crossing the marathon's finish line and receiving the medal together would be a special experience.
"Yes, you will know that feeling next year if you decide to do it" replied Mark. "If we decide to do it together," said Kelly. "No, no. Not gonna happen. I know myself. It's not gonna happen," concluded Mark.
