Princess Diana's niece in court charged with assault

Princess Diana's niece has appeared in court in South Africa having been charged with assault.

Lady Amelia Spencer is accused along with her friend's boyfriend John Barbis of attacking 27-year-old Ricci Cinti, who was on crutches at the time.

The pair were said to be queuing at the drive-through counter of a McDonalds restaurant when a taxi with the victim in the passenger seat tried to cut in front, allegedly prompting the attack.

Eighteen-year-old Amelia, who is the daughter of Earl Spencer, was described as silent in court on Thursday as her lawyers argued for the case to be dropped.

"I am confident the charges will be withdrawn. She is coping OK but it's bound to take its toll," Lady Amelia's lawyer told The Daily Telegraph.

Neither defendant has entered a plea as yet and the case was adjourned until April 1.
