Film director Roman Polanski has been denied release on bail following his arrest by Swiss authorities on September 26.
"There is still a very high risk that he will flee and that a release on bail... cannot guarantee Polanski's presence (for) the extradition procedure,” Justice Ministry spokesman Folco Galli said.
The Oscar-winner is being held in Switzerland pending his possible extradition to the United States.
He was detained over his 1977 conviction in America for having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
The Pianist director fled the United States in 1978 before he could be sentenced.
Several famous movie industry colleagues have signed a petition expressing their support for the 76–year-old in his fight against the extradition process, which can take months.
