Danny Boyle consoles Slumdog child actor after death of his father

Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle is helping child star Azharuddin Ismail cope with the death of his father.

Mohammed Ismail Shalkh, whose son played the young Salim in Slumdog Millionaire, passed away this week after suffering from tuberculosis.

Azharuddin's dad, who had his own business selling scrap wood, died at his family home in Mumbai which had been paid for by a charity that Danny set up.

After his passing a spokesperson for Mr Shalkh said he "had been so pleased by Azhar's success".

Nine-year-old Azhar has been left "absolutely devastated", the family representative adds.

The young star has support coming in from across the globe, with British director Danny already having written a letter to the family to express his sorrow.

The filmmaker is also expected to visit some time next month.
