At Liverpool's Anfield stadium where thousands paid their respects on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough tragedy, the team's captain Steven Gerrard and his colleague Jamie Carragher displayed a certificate granting the victims' familes the freedom of the city.

The sombre moment followed a two-minute silence at 3.06pm - the exact moment when disaster struck during Liverpool's 1989 away game with Sheffield Wednesday.

In a memorial service for the 96 people who were crushed to death in Yorkshire stadium of Hillsborough, the Bishop of Liverpool the RT Rev James Jones said the Queen had asked him to send her "thoughts and prayers" to everyone attending.
