A simple announcement on their website stating that REM have "decided to call it a day as a band" has ended nearly 40 years of making waves in the music business.
The multi-million selling group – composed of lead singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck and bassist Mike Mills – released their debut album Murmur in 1983.
Drummer Bill Berry was also in the band but left in 1997.
The quartet gained huge success during the 1990's with their massive hits Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts.
The band have continued to make albums over the years with their most recent, and presumably final album being released in March of this year.
