Claiming they are being persecuted in the US, Randy Quaid and his wife Evi are seeking asylum in Canada.
The celebrity couple were arrested in Vancouver on Thursday, following US warrants for vandalism charges, when they failed to turn up for a court appearance last week.
The pair provided a handwritten statement in which they said they were "requesting asylum from Hollywood 'star whackers'".
Speaking to an immigration adjudicator, Evi said: "We feel our lives are in danger.
"Randy has known eight close friends murdered in odd, strange manners. We feel that we're next."
