The story:

About A Boy stars everyones favourite charmer Hugh Grant, but don’t expect a rehash of his foppish Notting Hill role in this latest endeavour. The actor, following his bad boy portrayal in Bridget Jones’s Diary, has once again chosen to go against type.

In the film, based on the bestselling Nick Hornby novel of the same name, Hugh plays the not-so-likeable Will Freeman, a caddish 40-year-old bachelor who invents an imaginary son in order to meet women. But the Four Weddings And A Funeral actor does get chance to show his charming side when the faux father inadvertently finds a friend in a youngster wise beyond his years.

“There are a lot of interesting issues in this role,” says Hugh, “about identity and maturity and how one defines one’s place in the world. It’s really rather beautiful.”

Also bringing the book’s fascinating characters to life are Rachel Weisz and The Sixth Sense actress Toni Collette, who plays the boy’s suicidally depressed mum.

And for those who have read the internationally famous book, the film still holds some surprises. “The ending of the film is completely different, and I love it,” says author Nick Hornby. “I think it’s true to the spirit fo the book. It really, really works.”
