It looks like grey’s trying very hard to be the new black, with peppery streaks through the hair on the spring/summer catwalks, most notably Giles.

And now leader of the fash pack herself, Kate Moss, has rocked up at a handbag launch flashing steely glints through her blonde highlights.

Paris Haute Couture Week, too, saw the Mallen Streak run rampant through fabulously dressed up bouffants at Dior.

But we’re not sure it’s going to catch on, especially after talking to Mario, technical director at Richard Ward’s London salon, who reckons it’s a look that all but the most hardened fashionistas can carry off.

“Grey hair is draining on the complexion,” he says. “Ashen colour absorbs light, rather than reflecting it, so it can be very dulling.”

Grey streaks are easier to add to blonde hair because you simply bleach or high-lift tint the hair and then add an ashen toner on top.

But as grey is actually lighter than blonde, brown hair would have to go blonde first – otherwise known as pre-lightening – before the ashen tone can be added.
