Sir Paul McCartney may have pulled out at the last minute following the death of George Harrison, but there was no shortage of stars at the first ever Top Of The Pops Awards, which saw Irish boy band Westlife scoop the top pop title, and pint-sized Kylie Minogue scoring a double win.
Another high note of the evening was Mariah Carey’s appearance. Dressed in a shimmering black gown, the troubled diva proved she was back on form as she teamed up with the Westlife boys.
But the night’s biggest winner was Kylie. “She’s only five foot two, but in 2001 she was bigger than ever,” said host Jamie Theakston, as the girl from Down Under came up trumps in a Dolce & Gabbana black leather mini and multicoloured sheer blouse, to perform her massive hit Can’t Get You Out Of My Mind , for which she got the gong for Best Single. She went on to beat Madonna and U2 for Best Tour, though the veteran Irish rockers were honoured with the Best Rock Act award.
