22 MAY 2003
Faithful followers of North American singers Celine Dion and Alanis Morissette responded in their thousands to answer our question: Who's your favourite Canadian chanteuse?

With more than 12,000 votes counted, however, it was Quebec's Celine who came out on top, garnering the support of nearly 40 per cent of readers who logged on.

Alanis, however, still fared well, with more than a third of voters selecting the You Oughta Know singer as their fave.

Ontario-born Shania Twain, currently on a hot streak with her latest album, Up! came in a respectable third place, with 14 per cent.

Rounding out the list of five are two newcomers to the pop world, Nelly Furtado and Avril Lavigne.

The I'm Like A Bird star edged out pop-punk chart-topper Avril by nearly 300 votes, with about seven per cent deeming her Canada's best female musical export.
