15 JULY 2003
U2 frontman Bono has just splashed out £10 million on a new apartment in New York, in the same complex where Madonna was once refused a home. The opulent pad has a special reception room and a large terrace with views overlooking Central Park.

It will be an ideal venue for the singer to entertain his New York friends, but he will have to keep the noise down, as the exclusive San Remo apartment complex demands very high standards of behaviour.

Bono had to pass an interview with the residents' co-operative before the sale was approved. And making the grade was no sure thing, as Madonna was once refused permission to move into the block.

Previous residents at the complex include Steve Martin, Demi Moore and Steven Spielberg. Bono has purchased his new home from Apple Computers founder Steve Jobs.
