Prince William, who was recently distressed by the death of his maternal grandmother, showed his deep affection for his other granny, the Queen, at a polo prize-giving.

The towering future king, approaching Queen Elizabeth to receive the runners-up prize after he and his father's polo team had been defeated, bent down, took both her hands gently in his, and planted kisses on both her cheeks.

"Thank you, Granny," he said, accepting the award. It was the first time the young Prince had kissed his grandmother in public; the loving gesture comes just days after William delivered an emotional reading at the funeral of Frances Shand Kydd, his grandmother on Princess Diana's side.

His father Prince Charles was also enjoying the family aspect of the outing, grinning affectionately down at the Queen after one of her joking asides.

The only minus to the afternoon was the sporting defeat, but even that provided a memorable image - Charles and William coming off the field side by side with matching hand-to-head gestures and disbelieving expressions.
