David Tennant is head over heels for his wife of 14 years - but he once kept a major secret from her.
Doctor Who star David, 55, and Georgia, 41, have been married since 2011 and share five children together; 24-year-old Ty, who was adopted by the actor, Olive, 15, Wilfred, 13, Doris, 11, and six-year-old Birdie.
The couple are clearly devoted to each other, with Georgia often sharing glimpses of their home life with fans on social media.
And it's their close bond that made it all the harder for David to keep his wife in the dark ahead of her milestone 40th birthday on Christmas Day.
David revealed all during his appearance on The Assembly in April last year. He was asked by one of the participants: "What are you secretly proud of but have never told anyone about until now?"
"Shall I tell you a secret? When we're recording this, it's about to be my wife's 40th birthday. A few years ago, she got my name tattooed on her and she has been banging on at me about getting a tattoo to match," David responded.
"It's never been something I wanted to do, I don't like needles. But because it's her 40th birthday, I just had that done, which is her initial," he added, before unveiling a discreet "G" tattoo on his forearm.
David further explained how he's been hiding the tattoo at home with a bandage to keep it as a surprise for Georgia's special birthday.
He continued: "So, I'm quite proud that I managed to sit and have that done without screaming or passing out, and that for the past few days I've managed to pretend it hasn't happened yet.
"That's something I'm very proud of that I haven't told anyone about before this very moment, and I haven't even told my wife yet!"
The artist behind David's first tattoo
Tattoo artist Sym, using the Instagram handle @theflavouroftears, later posted an Instagram photo of David's first ever inking.
Sharing a picture of the actor, Sym captioned it: "Cat's out the bag - it was an honour to make this special 'G', in the font Georgia for David Tennant's first tattoo. A wonderful ode to @georgiatennantofficial for her birthday."
David and Georgia - the early days
The Doctor Who actor and his wife, who is the daughter of the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, met back in 2008 while filming the episode The Doctor's Daughter. In 2020, the couple appeared on That Gaby Roslin Podcast, where they opened up about the early days of their relationship.
"I very much forced it into happening, didn't I?" said Georgia. "I was very much the driving force. Had I not worked quite so hard, it might not have happened."
Her husband quipped in response: "That makes it sound like I was resistant, which was not what happened. I thought we were an unlikely life partnership, I suppose. There is a bit of an age gap."
He added: "Because Doctor Who had run through my life like a stick of rock, to end up marrying the daughter of one of the Doctors, it all felt a bit stupid... that wasn't really likely to happen. So there were a lot of things against it."
Tying the knot
The pair went on to marry on 30 December 2011, with the bride stunning in an A-line gown and short veil. They then held a New Year's Eve wedding reception at London's Globe Theatre.
The marriage made David a stepfather to Georgia's son Ty, whom she welcomed in 2002 with a previous partner.
Both Olive and Ty are following their parents into acting. The couple's daughter has earned roles in Belfast from 2021, alongside Dame Judi Dench and Jamie Dornan, as well as in 2022's Avoidance and alongside both her parents in You, Me and Him in 2017.
Meanwhile, Ty has starred in House of the Dragon, Tolkien, War of the Worlds, and Good Omens, in which David plays a leading role.
