Ewan McGregor melted fans' hearts with his touching definition of love during a recent interview.
The Scottish star, who is happily married to his Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, was stopped on the streets of SoHo in New York City by actor and breathwork practitioner Dara Coleman for a quick chat about romance.
Dara – who has been on a quest since August to ask 1,000 New Yorkers three questions about love – captured the heartwarming moment and posted it to his Instagram page.
When asked, "What is love to you?" Ewan, 55, didn't hesitate in his response. "My wife, Mary," he said.
Pressed on how he knew he was in love, the Obi-Wan Kenobi star shared: "Because you can't not know. It's not something you can question or have to analyse, you just know."
When asked if love is a choice, Ewan insisted: "No, it's not a choice," before adding: "I think if you're asking [yourself] if this is the real thing, you're probably not in the right ballpark."
Fans response to Ewan McGregor's sweet remarks about love
The comments section was quickly inundated with messages from fans. Praising his adorable response, one person wrote: "He's so cute," while another added: "He is totally right - you just know when it's the One."
Ewan's daughter Clara, whom he shares with his first wife Eve Mavrakis, couldn't help but comment on the sweet video. The 30-year-old actress posted a heart eye emoji, writing: "Cute!"
Ewan McGregor's marriage and family life
Before his relationship with Mary, 41, Ewan was married to production designer Eve Mavrakis for 22 years. The pair, who married in 1995, share four daughters: actresses Clara and Esther, as well as two adopted children, Jamyan and Anouk.
Ewan and Eve separated in May 2017. That same year, he began a relationship with Mary Elizabeth.
Ewan and Eve's divorce was finalised in 2020, and a year later, Mary gave birth to Ewan's first son, Laurie. The couple married in 2022.
Clara's reaction to her parents' split
At the time of her parents' split, Clara made her feelings known about her dad's new relationship.
Commenting on a post by a fan account for Mary Elizabeth, Clara wrote: "Most beautiful and talented woman on earth? Oh man y'all are delusional. The girl is a piece of trash."
Reflecting on her comment in 2018, Clara told The Times: "It wasn't the most mature way to go about things, but I was angry and upset."
Earlier this year, during an appearance at the Edinburgh Film Festival, Ewan revealed that he and Clara mended their relationship while working together on the 2023 film Bleeding Love.
"It was a very painful time," shared the Moulin Rouge actor. "My children were very hurt, Clara was very hurt and Clara was – I’m very grateful for it now – but she was very open with me, very vocal with me, and expressed her anger very well."
