Prince William and Prince Harry may have grown up under the watchful eye of the world, but then-Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana tried to give them a normal childhood where possible.
This meant being treated like every other student at their school, Ludgrove, and requesting their favourite junk food when they went home for the weekends.
Former royal chef Darren McGrady, who was Princess Diana's personal chef for four years, shared his step-by-step tutorial on how to cook the young royals' favourite childhood meals they asked for during movie nights with Princess Diana in Kensington Palace.
Before diving into his YouTube demonstration, Darren explained that William and Harry's love of barbecue food came from Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman's restaurant Sticky Fingers in High Street Kensington, where they used to visit on a Friday night as a "special treat". Trying to recreate the dish behind palace walls, Darren would cook the dish in the oven and serve it with corn on the cob and loaded potato skins.
However, this weekend meal did not go down well with their nanny, who would often "battle" with them over their diet.
"Nanny, who was in charge of the boys in the nursery upstairs, she always used to battle with them. She would say, 'I can't believe they're requesting all of that American nonsense, that American junk food. They should be having roast chicken and vegetables.' Well, the boys won," he laughed.
Darren proceeded to walk viewers through how to oven-bake the dish and still achieve that classic smoky flavour, which was a challenge he had to overcome to prevent the smell from wafting through the royal apartments.
The chef added: "Princess Diana, on the other hand, would choose a salad, and maybe some corn."
Princess Diana's favoured dish
He previously confessed Diana would also often request lobster, which was a dish the young royals didn't enjoy.
Following Meghan Markle's revelation in the trailer for the second season of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, he confirmed: "It's true that Prince Harry was never a fan of lobster. His mother loved it but would never order it when out with friends. She thought it was too expensive.
"Instead, she would have me, her chef, prepare lobster thermidor at least once a week. And if William and Harry were home, then BBQ baby back ribs and corn, followed by banana flan or ice cream. Everyone happy! [smiley face emoji]."
Reflecting on his time working with the royals, a decision he only made after camping out on the Mall on the eve of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's wedding, the author of Eating Royally told HELLO!: "Cooking at Buckingham Palace was amazing. It was everything I expected it to be.
"They have the most amazing produce, the best quality food, the best ingredients to work with. Just little things like picking up the phone and calling Harrods and asking for a rack of lamb with a two-inch eye of meat and six bones – you got everything you wanted."
