Oz borrows from St Tropez for deluxe beachwear collection

8 AUGUST 2007

There was more than a hint of St Tropez-style glamour as Australia's premier fashion designers unveiled the swimwear that the country's beach-loving elite will be wearing when summer arrives Down Under. And where the fashion-forward Aussies go, the rest of us are sure to follow, so there was plenty of interest for European water babies, too, at the special showing in Sydney.

On display were stunning swimsuits and cover-ups which would take any self-respecting fashionista worth her Christian Louboutins off a luxury yacht and into one of the French resort's elegant nightspots for cocktails at sunset.

This being a Gallic-inspired show stripes were key. And bikini specialist Seafolly had them splashed across Fifties-style halter-necks and strapless two-pieces in the red, white and blue of the French Tricolour flag. Wide-brimmed sunhats and bejewelled turbans completed a look Ava Gardner might have worn while holidaying with Frank Sinatra.

Other fabulous ideas for next summer's wardrobe came from beachwear gurus Zimmerman. Their jewel-coloured kaftans and mini-dresses are clearly aimed at those hobnobbing with the jet-set. While a beautifully draped, thigh-skimming lemon yellow number from Collette Dinnigan showed why her designs are irresistible to stars like Nicole Kidman, Jerry Hall and Claudia Schiffer.
