The ninth season saw Voight (played by Jason Beghe) determined to take down mobster Escano and the Los Temidos gang but unfortunately in the process his confidential informant Anna died. But despite his loss, the rest of the team including Ruzek, Kevin Atwater, and Burgess conducted a raid and found the gang's stash of an estimated 400 kilos of drugs.

Elsewhere Kim decided to move forward without Adam in her life, after she realized that her daughter Makayla was coping better with their current schedule. to Los Temidos.

Gwen Sigan, executive producer, later told HELLO! that fans "will see Ruzek dealing with the aftermath of the decision to go in separate directions" but promised that they aren't "tying a bow" on the romance.

"Now comes either healing or separation, they either learn and figure out, for Makayla's best interests, how to move forward as a couple or in Makayla's best interests not as a couple," added Marina.
