Australian actress Nicole Kidman has told a British tabloid how her life turned “surreal” in the aftermath of her break-up with Tom Cruise. The couple divorced early last year after a relationship that lasted nearly ten years. In the ensuing months Nicole had to cope with the trauma of marriage failure, losing a baby in a miscarriage, and a stalker.

“I would look back at that time as surreal,” she told the Sunday Express. “In the weirdest way it has opened me up. I have carried the thought with me that whatever happens in the future it won’t get much worse than this.

“I have had my life turned over. I am dinner-party gossip. I get looked at and talked about. I get embarrassed but I throw it aside and try not to be. My whole life has been spent trying to push through and beat such things.”

While Nicole’s life off-screen may have been an emotional roller coaster, on-screen her career has never been better. She has enjoyed box-office glory with three top-notch movie performances and had a UK Christmas number one single with a version of the Frank and Nancy Sinatra duet Something Stupid, alongside British popstar Robbie Williams.

The 34-year-old actress won a Golden Globe for Moulin Rouge! – a performance which also earned her an Oscar nomination – plus critical acclaim and a BAFTA nomination for her role in The Others. She is currently earning plaudits Stateside for her portrayal of a Russian mail-order bride in the upcoming thriller Birthday Girl.

Birthday Girl comes out in the UK in June.
