Full house fans have been treated to rare insider information in recent days, as sitcom star Jodie Sweetin shared surprising truths about the casting of Bob Saget in the show’s original pilot.
Speaking on the Taboo's Comics & Kicks podcast, the 44-year-old actress, who played middle daughter Stephanie Tanner, revealed it was not Bob who was first cast to play one of America’s best-known fathers.
The star admitted Teen Wolf star John Posey played the dad in the original unaired pilot of Full House, as at the time Bob was hosting CBS' The Morning Program. However, while Bob was not originally set to play the widowed dad-of-three, Stephanie admitted he was always first choice.
"We shot an entire pilot, actually, with a different dad, with John Posey, who was a lovely human being and very sweet and wonderful."
But when Bob became free of his clashing CBS hosting duties, Stephanie admitted, “we reshot the entire pilot”, so as to feature the iconic star.
Executive producer Jeff Franklin also reportedly knew it had to be Bob, as Stephanie continued on by saying, "He was like, ‘I just know it. I just know this is who we need as the dad’. And he was right."
The family sitcom premiered in 1987 and quickly became one of television's most beloved shows, following widowed father Danny Tanner as he raised his three daughters - D.J., Stephanie and Michelle - with the help of brother-in-law Jesse Katsopolis and best friend Joey Gladstone.
Bob went on to play Danny throughout the show's eight-season run before reprising the role in Netflix's sequel series Fuller House, which aired from 2016 until 2020.
Meaning fans were shocked by the news of his passing in 2022. The late comedian was a popular stand-up artist and was touring up until the point of his death on 9 January. His body was discovered in his hotel room, and an autopsy concluded that he had passed away from blunt force trauma from an accidental blow to the back of the head, which was likely caused by a fall.
The star left behind his wife, TV presenter Kelly Rizzo, and three daughters, who he shared with his first wife, Sherri Kramer. Bob's daughters were clearly the apples of his eye, and in 2016, he told People: "[My daughters] are the best people I know. They are the light of my life.
"I am a fortunate man in that all three of my daughters are exceptional. Very high beings, very smart people, very wonderful and very brilliant, very beautiful. They're all artists."
