Professor Stephen Hawking is set to appear in a one-off sketch for Comic Relief. The 73-year-old has joined David Walliams to film a mini episode of Little Britain, more than eight years after the sketch show ended.

David tweeted a photo from the sketch on Tuesday, telling fans: "#LittleBritain is returning for @rednoseday Lou is now the carer to Professor Stephen Hawking. @BBCOne Fri 13th Mar."

In the picture David is dressed as the carer Lou, who famously looked after Andy in the BBC One comedy. However he is now in charge of caring for the famous physicist in the sketch, which was filmed at Cambridge University in January.

David was joined by another famous face for the Comic Relief skit – comedienne Catherine Tate will also play the role of a nun. However Matt Lucas, who starred in the original show from 2003 to 2006 was noticeably absent from filming at St John's College in Cambridge.

The actor is currently working in Los Angeles but recently admitted to Jonathan Ross that he wouldn't rule out working on another series of the show.

"It's an interesting one and I'm not saying we'd never do anymore but I suppose the fear is that if you did it, it just wouldn't be the same and I've always admired Abba who never got back together you see.

"We might get back together but we might do something else that's the thing. I wonder whether [it would] be as funny? You'd have to do Vicky Pollard as a grandmother with 56 grandkids!"

Little Britain is not the only comedy series to be revived for Comic Relief on 13 March. Rowan Atkinson will also resurrect his role as Mr Bean for a one-off special, while Dawn French is also set to play Geraldine Archer in a mini episode of The Vicar of Dibley.
