Duchess Sophie dodges a dreaded 'hat hair fail' with this humble beanie secret

It's very easy to get 'hat hair' when wearing a close-fitting piece of headgear, but Duchess Sophie's blonde mane has never looked better

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh were pictured meeting Finnish conscripts during their royal visit to Santahamina Garrison in Helsinki, Finland, this week, which was part of their action-packed, three-day visit.

Sophie may have been bracing for the chilly climate, but it didn't stop her from looking as chic as ever, donning a pair of heritage-check flares and a knitted jumper.

To keep warm, she added a neutral beanie, bypassing the dreaded 'hat hair' effect that can leave your hair flat and deprived of all volume.  The mother-of-two's mane looked bouffant and wispy, with lightly flicked-out ends.

How to avoid 'hat hair'?

"It’s getting to that time of year when it gets colder, and everyone starts wearing hats to keep themselves warm for winter", Michael Gray, multi-award-winning hairstylist, tells HELLO!.

"Most of the time you end up with hat hair, where it sticks to your head, it’s flat, it’s lost its shape, but it can be revitalised with ease."

To combat this common problem, Michael suggests clever styling before you place the hat on your head, and after, to reverse any compression.

"I would suggest lightly spritzing a refresh spray, like the 'Living Proof Style Refresh', through the hair before brushing through with a detangling brush for an even distribution, so there’s no product build-up," the stylist notes.

"Blow-dry your hair as normal with a round or flat brush. The great thing about a refresh spray is that you don’t need to fully rewash and dry the hair, as it eliminates any odours, especially if it has been hot wearing the hat," he explains.

The Princess of Wales' beanie hat

Duchess Sophie is in good company when it comes to her beanie hat. Her royal relative, the Princess of Wales, had her own moment wearing the humble headgear. Back in 2024, Catherine's brother, James Middleton, released his memoir, Meet Ella.

At the start of the book, printed on the inside cover, a previously unseen picture of him and his family was revealed, featuring his mother, Carole Middleton, father Michael, sister Pippa and his older sister. The group shot shows the family on a hike, and they all look happy in casual clothes.

In the picture, we couldn't help but notice that his royal sibling was wearing a beanie hat for the first time. The mother of three loves hats, particularly formal headwear.

Catherine has a huge collection of casual hats

Over the years, though, Catherine has stepped out in a variety of casual hats: a bobble hat, a cap, and even a baker boy cap, but no beanie, so this was quite the change.
