The Prince and Princess of Wales have carried out an autumn refresh of their social media accounts – with two new profile pictures.

Prince William and Kate's previous photos on the official Kensington Palace Instagram and X accounts showed them in the Princess's cancer recovery video.

But on Friday, the Instagram picture was replaced by a stunning portrait of the couple, initially shared in a black-and-white format to mark Valentine's Day earlier this year.

The beautiful photograph, taken by Josh Shinner in the Norfolk countryside, could be seen in colour for the first time.

Meanwhile, the picture chosen for X was a glamorous portrait of the couple taken ahead of President Donald Trump's second state banquet at Windsor Castle last September.

The Princess wore a gold Chantilly lace evening coat over a silk crepe gown by British designer Phillipa Lepley. Meanwhile, William was in white-tie and a Windsor tailcoat, and the Most Noble Order of the Garter Sash with the Lesser George.

The changes have clearly gone down well with fans, with one person commenting on their latest Instagram post: "I love that new profile picture."

Another person noted: "Different profile pictures on the different platforms; they're experimenting."

William and Kate's profile pictures over the years

The couple last made a permanent change to their profile picture in 2024, updating the picture to a beautiful shot of them laughing while sitting on a blanket in the middle of the woods.

The picture was a still taken from Kate's cancer recovery video, which featured candid shots of the whole family, including children Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

In the past, the Waleses have opted for family photos with their children as the main display image, including when they participated in the BBC's The Big Night In, and another taken at their country home in Norfolk in 2018.

More recently, however, they seem to prefer focused images of them as a couple on official engagements.

In November, the couple updated their profile photo on X (formerly known as Twitter) to a new temporary bio image.

The photograph in question featured the Prince and Princess of Wales at the Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance in 2024.

This is typical practice for the couple each year.

Prince William hosts secret gala

The profile picture change was noted after it was revealed that William had hosted a secret gala at Windsor Castle to mark the 125th anniversary of the Royal Navy Submarine service.

The Prince was seen dressed in full finery before delivering a speech to those gathered in the ornate room.

A post on the couple's social media accounts read: "For 125 years, submariners have operated in some of the most challenging environments, demonstrating professionalism, resilience and quiet dedication in service to their country.

"As Commodore-in-Chief, it was an honour to celebrate those who have supported the Service through history, and recognise the vital role submariners play in the defence of the United Kingdom."

This week, William has visited Wales for engagements focused on extreme weather events and flooding, and joined the Princess for a visit to Leeds Rhinos, learning more about the inspiring legacy of late rugby player Rob Burrow.
