Queen Máxima of the Netherlands gave royal watchers a lesson in fashion and style, arriving in Copenhagen in a glamorous grey studded coat. The monarch was kicking off a two-day tour of Denmark with her husband King Willem-Alexander, after the couple were invited by Danish ruler Queen Margrethe.

Ever the gracious royal, Máxima opted to pay tribute to both countries, wearing a coat made by Danish designer Claes Iversen who studied arts and fashion in the Netherlands.

The Dutch queen wowed in the grey number, which featured faux jewels in the shapes of stars and crosses.

Máxima topped off her look with grey peep-toe heels and a matching hat, while she kept her blonde hair tied into a chic low bun.

Stepping off their plane at the Copenhagen airport on Tuesday, Máxima and Willem-Alexander were given an extremely warm welcome by their Danish counterparts. Queen Margrethe and Henrik, Prince Consort were pictured embracing their guests of honour and the 74-year-old queen was even treated to a kiss on the hand by the gallant Willem-Alexander.

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, who is married to first-in-line to the throne Crown Prince Frederik, looked particularly thrilled and rushed to courtesy in front of Máxima and Willem-Alexander. The gorgeous Australian hugged Máxima tightly and scored just as high in the style stakes, wearing a beige coat, royal purple hat and matching gloves.

Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark had also made the effort to welcome their Dutch guests, with the pretty Frenchwoman matching her sister-in-law in a neutral cream coat and elegant purple fedora.

Máxima and Willem-Alexander are making the state visit to "strengthen the already excellent relations between Denmark and the Netherlands," according to the Dutch royal palace's website. Their tour will aim to reinforce the two countries' existing economic and social cooperation, while also focusing on sustainable energy.

On the first day of their visit, Máxima and Willem-Alexander were given lunch by the Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at the Christiansborg Palace. They will then attend a conference addressing issues such as welfare and families, happiness, security and trust, solidarity and immigration at Aalborg University.

On Tuesday night the Dutch monarchs will attend a state banquet in their honour, again at Christiansborg Palace.
